In fact, the Elaina we follow in the 'Retroactive Grief' story in Volume 3 is one of those alternates, though the readers don't learn of this until the 'A Story About All Kinds of Ashen Witches' story spells it out.

Alternate Self: In 'A Story About All Kinds of Ashen Witches', Elaina meets up with many other alternate versions of herself and how they dealt with their own journeys.
